Foundation

For the advancement of public knowledge and appreciation of the Bentley motorcar and its history by the establishment and maintenance of a museum, library and archive for the preservation, exhibition and study of the Collection.

W.O. Bentley Memorial Foundation

The foundation is a Registered Charity, established by the Bentley Drivers Club, to guard and promote the heritage of all things Bentley. This is enshrined in a Trust Deed where Charitable Objects are “the advancement of public knowledge and appreciation of the Bentley Motorcar and its history but the advancement and maintenance of a museum, library and archive for the preservation exhibition and study of the Collection” however we are not just about cars, but also about WO, his life, his aero engines and particularly about the Bentley Motorcar.

HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT

At the Annual General Meeting in April 1997, Richard Sanders was elected Chairman, and Tony Dyas Hon Treasurer of the Bentley Drivers Club. They immediately met at the then headquarters in Long Crendon near Thame, to discuss how best to preserve the archives of the Club for future generations, and especially to prevent them being sold in the unlikely event of the BDC becoming insolvent. Thoughts turned to a Trust.

The hope was that the Trust should be established with the approval of the Main Committee as soon as possible. The sanction of Members for the transfer of the archival assets would then be sought. Meanwhile the Main Committee and Regional Chairmen unanimously agreed to the proposal to form “The W O Bentley Memorial Foundation”.

The Final Trust Deed had been agreed by the proposed Trustees in January 1998, and on the 17th February that year the Foundation came into being. At the same time an Application for Registration as a Charity was sent to the Charity Commission for approval and registration, subsequently achieved. At the following EGM a resolution that the archives should be transferred was supported unanimously.

The Foundation’s records, library and artifacts are housed in the W O Bentley Memorial Building being the HQ of the Bentley Drivers Club. All WOBMF publications are available from The Club Shop.
