B 143 WG
1954 R-Type

My driver's window winder mechanism started "crunching" slightly and has now jammed, leaving me unable to close the window.

Before I start butchering door panels, etc. to investigate, I have been trying without success to find an exploded view of the mechanism.

The RROC Australia Technical Library doesn't appear to have a section on the body, (or more likely, I am unable to get into the correct section.)

There appears to be no reference to side window parts on Flying Spares or Introcar sites (the latter often has very good exploded views.)

Does anyone know where to find a diagram of the mechanism?

I presume others must have had this problem, in fact I have vague recollections of jamming a length of wood to prop up a window glass inside the door some cheap old banger fifty-odd years ago, (but obviously the Bentley deserves much more respect!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially as to how to go about exposing the mechanism without causing irreparable damage to the 63 year old interior door panel, etc.

That is an excellent find, thanks Mark.

Paul, don't think your car will have the same type of mechanism, my B373TO has a multi turn system, but at least you can now get to see it.

Paul,

If you return to the RROCA site, PW Technical, and click on the "Early Silver Dawn etc",you will see a bookmark for "Carbody" which details the front door dismantling.
The early and late cars (R Type) have basically the same mechanism.
The runner rollers in the groove of the steel bottom glass mount have a habit of seizing, along with the side guides.
The rain never stops getting in and rust jamming the works.

Thankyou for your prompt responses which made me feel that I am part of a club with a great reservoir of helpful knowledge and experience.

Mark, the link is excellent and is a testament to the Australian spirit of self-sufficiency and resourcefulness. This shows me how to expose the mechanism and although mine has the later winder I should be able to prop the glass up and closed for now.

John, thankyou for your encouragement. I have seen your helpful posts since joining the forum as a fellow R-Type owner, and have been meaning to contact you for some time, as I lived in Staffordshire from 1972 to 76 and may well have bumped into you then, (not literally, I hope!)

Also, my car started out in nearby Shropshire and then spent most of its life from the 1960's to 2010 in South Staffs. (although I didn't know it then.) Maybe you saw it at local BDC meetings in the past? (Maroon and silver, reg. OXY 907.) I bought it locally in Berkshire in 2013. Will drop you a line soon.

Christopher, I found the page easily thanks to you; even though it says "Early Silver Dawn, etc." it shows my later winder type mechanism. Your comments on rust noted and judging by the size of the drain holes under the door the designers must have anticipated a bit of a water flow!

Most encouraged by you all,
kind regards
Paul

All sorted out.

One of the runner rollers had come out of the channel and jammed.
Realigned using angled grips (instead of hammer!)
No evidence of rust in the mechanism although may have been some at an earlier date in bottom of door as painted black inside

Thanks again for your help and encouragement.
