Would it be a good idea to go to a synthetic oil now my fully re-built S1 engine is nicely run in? If so what grade?

Whatever anybody has to say about synthetic oil, it gets its scuff resistant properties from the ZDDP, in the same way as Wynns, or other oil additives.

Even the most promoted one, Mobil 1, has only the barest minimum, and I would go for mineral oil bases Comma Super Diesel 15/40, or whatever they call it now, as it has quite a bit more zinc in it, and change it every 5000 miles or annually.
Rolls-Royce never resolved the scuffing problem with the flat tappet engines, such that the Arnage V8 from 2007 on, has roller tappets, they the V 8,s chew the camshafts up with the lightly doped oil.
