Ewan

I have just sat and watched the 5 part series with enjoyment. Most of the time I chuckled at the 'goings on'. As one who was in the trade for many years it brought back many memories. How they work out the profit God only knows. All done for the viewers I'm sure?

Thank you for the lead.

Regards

An enjoyable hour's comedy. The hourly rate for the bloke who did the prep work has to be about 12 1/2 pence! I used to get that for Simonizing my Dad's Oxford.

I visited the Classic Motor Show in November. There was a car very like this one up for Auction on the Sunday (circa £8K). The blurb said that it had been spruced up by the two chaps in the video. It was parked in the area being used by the Sproting Bears Dream Rides.

I wonder if it was the same car???????

Thanks for that, Ewan - brilliant! I have only watched the first episode so far, but isn't it fun?

I love the bit where he says " . . . sitting up front with a great big grin on your face", because that sums up my Bentleys for me. Every time I go out in one of them it's the same - the "grin factor" is worth every penny!

Happy New Year.

Very interesting Ewan. I hope you won't mind if I post it on the VSCC site which has a "What have you found on youtube?" section.

I was frequently on the Reading to Chippenham bit of the road from 1954 onwards first of all in my Armstrong Siddeley and then in the MK VI (B420EY) from 1959. By-passes were the exception rather than the rule in those days and, I think, travelling by car was more pleasant although journey times were longer. You did have a chance to see what the towns looked like and there was much less traffic. Parking was easier too.

The clip was an indication of just how much the road conditions have changed in the last forty or so years. I started driving in 1965, so recall (just) similar conditions, although in my sidevalve Ford there was no chance of performing the type of overtaking exercise done by the Jaguar, especially in the wet, when pressing on the accelerator caused the single vacuum operated screenwiper to stop.

The centre of Marlborough isn't changed in character, and is just as awkward as ever if you are travelling between Andover and Swindon since there is still no north to south bypass.

Yes, you may be. I spend time in a different way which still involves posting to the Forum. I prod the Website Subcommittee to show more interest but it does not produce any results so it could, perhaps, be classed as a waste!

It was in one of your earlier posts with pictures of Bentleys at Villa d'Este (General Discussions, Villa D'Este 2008) that you noted that the pictures could not be seen if you did not log in. You were the first one to spot it. They still can't and I think that this is quite ridiculous.

I'm sure most people will know that that is Chris Williams, who also owns the 24 litre Napier Bentley. He has been working on the new car for some years. A year or so back, he was about to start it for the first time when he found water in the cylinders, so had to strip it down again. It's great to see he has it running now. He is just the right person for a car like that. Unfortunately, he won't be taking the car to BDC Silverstone, but says "maybe Dunsfold end Aug".

Thanks for posting the link - I hadn't known Chris had the car running.

Not quite fair, Laurie. Some of us are very interested in the Forum and see it as an essential part of the club's electronic presence. That is also the implied policy of ITSC, as I understand it.
It is taking a little longer than intended to bring the revamped web sit online, but that is not unusual for an IT project.

I have not had time to view all the videos on this thread yet, but look forward to doing so. The Forum is an ideal way to bring such material together for members' enjoyment. Thanks to all who have spent time browsing the net and giving us the links and the comments thereon.

Best wishes for 2014.

The comment you mention was made some years ago and referred to the Website Subcommittee as it existed at that time. It was entirely justified.

The membership of the present ITSC is largely different and my earlier comment in no way refers to them.

Excellent! As it should be.

I am hoping that there will be many postings about the ridiculous proposals for 60 mph motorway limits. It will not stop at M1 and M3 - my guess is that, if it is not nipped in the bud, M5 will be next.

http:mways.breakaways.org.uk has links to the Highways Agency's online consultations if anyone is minded to lodge objections. There is also a petition (also linked) but it has attracted few signatures so far.

I suspect it is more resigned. There is a substantial element that has no confidence that responding to consultations has any effect on the outcome. I do not share that view, as politicians make the final decision and they are influenced by numbers.

A recent example was the attempt by the very doctinaire "green"-run Brighton Council to kill off Brighton Speed Trials. An online petition against the proposal attracted 12430 signatures - so great a response that the proposal was dropped, unanimously. https://www.facebook.com/savebrightonspeedtrials to see the story.

Hence, pace Mr Carnley, I would encourage any who do not share his view of what ought to be to respond. What is certain is that if there are few objections, the proposal will pass.
