I’m living in Bahrain and have just bought a 1991 Turbo RL. The good news is it costs less than $15 to fill the tank; the bad news is there are no experienced Bentley or RR mechanics here (except the local dealer - outside of my budget)
As it’s my first Bentley I’m looking for some guidance on two topics
1. There is play at the top of the steering wheel column where the splined shaft can rub up against the outer tube. When I removed the cowl I found small pieces of broken circular piece. I suspect this is a nylon (?) bush that has disintegrated. Does anybody know where I can source this bush? I presume this is the only part required?
2. There is some scruffing and fading of the leather on the drivers seat and armrest. A local leather restorer proposed to replace the leather. Is it possible to treat the leather instead and if yes what would method and products would you recommend?

I have had a lot of success with the Liquid leather range

If you send them a small piece of the leather from under the seat or something, they will match it. The procedure is to clean with the G12 cleaner, moisturise with the G11 and then to clean back with methylated spirit, and then to re colour. It can really work wonders, and I have had great success on my own car - but you have to work at it if you seek a factory finish, and you have to remove the seats to do it. After a lot of experimentation, I found the best way to apply the dye was by spraying it, which means compressor and spray gun etc - which I have luckily. But you could try applying with a sponge which does work, but is best if there is some texture to the leather - it was almost impossible to get a good finish this way on my centre armrest which was very smooth leather with virtually no texture in the surface hence why I resorted to spraying and it was worth the hassle.
Of course, if you have contrasting piping you have to spend some time masking this off with special low-tack masking tape which is available from specialist decorators merchants in the UK like Brewers. |
