What is a reasonable hourly rate for an independent RRB specialist garage within a 30mile range of Central London? My man charges £70+vat which I find a bit steep.
If anyone has any recommendations to share feel free to private message me. Thanks.

Hello,

Having had some experience of specialist maintenance facilities, I reckon that £70 + VAT per hour is about right for a specialist provider that has access to special tools, clean and tidy workshops and all the right knowledge. If it is a 'man and a van' who hasn't got access to the right tools and (most importantly) knowledge, then best to avoid.

I'm a Chartered Engineer and my view is that we should honour (and be willing to pay for) the skills and knowledge that Engineering Mechanics, Technicians and Engineers study for and provide for us.

After all:

1. How much does your accountant or lawyer charge?
2. Would he have the first clue what to do with your engine?
3. Would you trust him?

If you can't do the work yourself (which I encourage - great to learn how our cars work), then pay the right price and enjoy developing a good relationship with your car's maintainer.

All best,

Alan
