It must have given WO some satisfaction to see HRH in a car that he had so much input to;

There is an interesting piece in the March copy of the Automobile about Frank Feeley and Lagonda. In the thirties and forties, there was quite a cohort of ex-Cricklewood chaps there including WO, of course. We are told that Feeley, the stylist, "didn't like Bentley at all", though there is no explanation of this statement.
Maybe Feeley's relatively humble background caused him to regard WO as a toff? Certainly WO was described as "aloof" at Cricklewood. Those who met him in later life describe him as modest and unassuming. More questions than answers, as usual. |

Stuart Stewart Tresilian designed the engine which was built at Meltham Mills, the gearbox is also David Brown, built in Lockwood,Huddersfield.
The engine is an enlarged 2.6 litre the bores staggered to increase the capacity. The connecting rods are offset on the big ends.
The suspension was designed by Donald Bastow.
A lot of money for a royal connection.
See the Bentley R Type in the Monaco sale in May, sold by George Giese 3 years ago for $54,000. |
