I want to fit larger headlamps than the Smiths i have on my 3 litre.
I have a vague memory of someone making extension pieces as large headlamps will touch the rad if not mounted forward.
Anyone heard of this?

Can't help with your specific question, but I've been looking though some of my coachwork books and am amazed by the variety of headlamps fitted.
It may be worthwhile to contact a firm like Stanley Mann who have rebuilt many cars to a convential Le Mans Rep style, They must have removed many less conventional headlamp mountings and may be able to help from their parts pile.
What type of lamp have you in mind? My personal opinion is that anything much larger than a P80 rarely looks quite right on a 3ltr. Are you seeking better illumination or just a different look?

Hello John,
For what it's worth, my 3 litre has a standard VdP body and 11" Marchal headlights (I suspect from new). Here are four photos showing the mounting brackets. These are pretty substantial bronze castings, obviously made for the job, and carry the lamps well forward to clear the radiator. There is also a second bracket (which you can see in the pictures) which goes forward to the chassis but despite these and the solidity of the main brackets when I first owned the car (in 1950s!) the lights wobbled a bit and we added a tiebar between them which helped a lot. Hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you need to know more about our setup.
