Due to inexperience with V.Bentley I have done a few miles with a defective magneto 'switched on'
This has resulted in the need for an expensive rebuild,
What is the best 'checking regime' and how long would you expect to run before a lot of damage is done?

John - magnetos can be a pain in the proverbial - believe me, I had a run of bad luck with both of mine, but have had no trouble since the last rebuild about five years ago. I doubt that you caused, or exacerbated, the problem by running with it switched on.
It is worth doing a mag check periodically by switching them off individually from time to time.
The last time that I had a problem, I sent the offending one off to Adrian Gorvin, (there are others), made up a blanking plate and ran happily on one mag until the rewound one came back.
You might even be able to borrow one, but make sure that it is for the correct side of the engine, as they are "handed".
