Greetings to Everyone!
I am wondering from scrolling through all of the posts and threads why nearly all of the participants are men?
Don't ladies every participate? I know they do at all the club functions. Maybe they are not interested in many of the topics.
I don't know but hope to kickoff what generates some interesting threads.
Best to everyone!

The ladies call these and similar associations "The Silly Societies", and spend their time bragging about holidays, the new kitchen, the new hair stylist, colonic irrigation,"Strictly Come Dancing" and similar moronic s----.
"Feminism" is a word to cover what my Great Grandfather would say to his wife, "Lizzie Bray, thy name is weather cock"! |

Was that your great grandfather's translation of "varium et mutabile semper femina"?
Not that I share the sentiments. |

True, or "La Donna e mobile".
They had 10 children from 1888, 9 of whom survived to old age, but there were no frivolous distractions in those days, or all the noise . |

George,
The answer to your question about ladies' participation should be readily apparent from the first response. It is highly unlikely that any woman would want anything to do with a forum on which such ungentlemanly comment is tolerated, and I for one should like to dissociate myself from such views.
Regards,
James |

It is curious, the club has (has had?) some excellent lady competitors in WO cars, we have had a lady president, some brilliant lady organisors of events, I know these are in the minority but there are no glass ceilings in the club.

Hello John!
I really did not think about feminism or glass ceilings in my query. Rather that maybe the ladies are just are not as interested in the history of the cars or its mechanics.
I have read that one of the prominent members was involved serious accident racing a couple of years. As you noted, a number of ladies have held office in the BDC administration.
Last night I was scrolling through so many topics and just noticed that everyone was a guy. Maybe we should reach out to the lady members or the wives of members to invite to join. They might be timid in this respect.
It really is no "big deal." But I thought it somewhat curious that so few ladies join in the lively chats. I have learned so much just writing and following threads. I have seen photographs of the home of the lady who introduced smallpox vaccination years before Edward Jenner in about 1799.
Thanks for the reply!

Hello Chris!
You must be a Verdi lover or at least of Rigoletto!
Might I ask what is the meaning of a "weather cock?" I have honestly never heard or read the phrase.
Are you planning to restore the photo of the S1 that I saw last night? God that looks like quite an undertaking.
Thanks for the reply

An old translation of the Latin I quoted earlier is "A windfane changabil huf puffe", and I think windfane, weather cock and wind vane all mean the same thing. |

It's just not a girly thing to be a participant in these forums.
That's not to say that women don't contribute to them from time to time
I know it's a stereotype but, conversely, how many men do you know who like to go shopping? There are some but not many as it's just not a blokey thing to do.
I love listening to 'Women's Hour' on UK's Radio 4 just to get an idea of how the female sex think and what they are up to. I wonder if there any women lurking out there who dip into the BDC forum to similarly see what we're up to? |

George,
Weather cock.
Nigel Gesley P2, Cock O, The North, as originally designed, with Lentz valve gear, built in Doncaster.
The various "Cocks" could fill a book,as in " My Old Cock"!
It is doubtful that Lady Mary Wortley ever visited Stainborough Castle ,in the picture, but came from the family line. The principal memorial to her is in Lichfield Cathedral.
Little girls are indoctrinated by their mothers at birth into "Little girls things and little boys things", few ever become daddies workshop mate, but it is good that some do roll up their sleeves and get stuck into the muck.
Few husbands will tolerate a girl with dirty hands, and just as mothers create masculinity and femininity at and on their knee, it persists.
Four out of the five farmers daughters from the adjacent farm, who all drove tractors and ploughed fields, dropped it immediately they married!
Surely as a physician, you have witnesses the differences in treatment of
children by the same mother.
Barrie, just as the Chinese are inscrutable, women will only ever pass on "an idea", the rest is cloaked in "silence" and "I,ll see how I feel at the time". |

Chris ,
As a father of boys and a grandfather of both boys and girls, it is surprising how the girls go straight for pink and princess, while the boys home in on destruction. - in my experience, certainly in earl life, the genes have it.

Dear Chrises,
Woman's Hour would love you two!
I heard the presenter, Jenni Murray, say that we shouldn't refer to them as 'ladies' but 'women'.
Crikey! Can we get anything right? |

Barrie - As I understood the hierarchy, officers had ladies, NCO's had wivwes, and other ranks had women!
I think that I'd be best advised to keep well out of range of Ms Jenni Murray of Women's Hour and the " . . . . Mostous Regiment of Women"!

Nature, nurture, peer pressure, individual sensitivities (or not), and most of all "Magazines".
Did you know that 50% of the cost of a bottle of scent is spent on advertising?
"And the end of it,s sittin, and thinkin,
An, dreaming Hell fires to see,
So be warned by my lot,
Which I know you will not
An, learn about women from me!
"For the Colonel,s lady and Judy O,Grady, are sisters under their skin.
Now, where is my new comic ?
Another anorak fact is that there were 12 "Lassies", all dogs, why? |

Hi Chris!
Greetings from not too sunny Florida this morning. We are experiencing Hurricane Matthew and as I write I could lose electricity at any time. So hoping this goes through.
It is raining fearsomely and we are expecting about 7 inches of the wet stuff that is blowing in sheets parallel to the street. I have the Bentley in the garage all battened down,, and luckily there are no trees on the property that could fall down.
The television shows numerous homes with trees on their roofs etc. Hopefully this will be the last nasty thing that Mother Nature throws at us. It is finally cool ... in the mid 20's Celsius.
Thanks for the wonderful photo of the rooster weather vane.
One respondent noted the ungentlemanly content of the forum to which I take exception. If there is a hint of lack of gentlemanly content, it is certainly tongue in cheek. One could run with the reference to cock as Shakespeare would have loved to do.
There is a book called The Bawdy Shakespeare which is certainly out o f print by many years but well worth a read if you can find it.
People are people despite the centuries between us and clever references to sexual activities and reproductive parts have always been popular.
None of this has a thing to do with Bentleys other than my sheltering mine from the elements.
Hope you have a great weekend!

Henry V: Act 2, Scene 1, Page 3
Bardolph says: -
For I can take, and Pistol's cock is up. And flashing fire will follow.
Always caused amusement in Eng Lit in 1963.
Good luck and fortune favour you during the bad weather. |

Hi John
Fortunata did favor us with no damage and no loss of power.
I relished your quote from the play. Such humor escapes most of the US population. Sometimes I feel I live in the land of idiots what with Trump running for office.
Thanks for your reply

You can add Chaucer's Miller's Tale (Canterbury Tales) to the list of classical bawdy humour.

It seems from recent news articles that his pistol shot him in the foot, perhaps he cocked it once too often! |

Avoid them?
Never!
They're great fun,
I heard Ms Murray talking last week to a feminist who for the last 30 years (yes, three zero) had made no public appearances without wearing a gorilla mask.
((No, stop laughing, I'm being serious)
She did this because........
a) she didn't want the fact that she was a woman to get in the way of a 'gender-neutral' conversation.
b) to show solidarity with the plight of wild animals.
Jenni Murray finished the interview by complimenting the woman on the handsomeness of the mask.
So when you suggest I give up my occasional attendance at' The Daily Cervix' I must politely decline as my sense of humour would not survive the withdrawal symptoms.
EDIT.
You do have to admit it is a very good mask which perhaps didn't come across very well on Radio 4.
