Has anyone fitted a towbar to a Mk6 special?
I would like to fit a tow bar to tow a teardrop camper, looking at the design of the car I do not think there is sufficient strength to merely bolt on a tow ball to the rear chassis cross piece, I think that it will need to be to be secured to the Chassis longitudinal.
I prefer to have the tow bar as a bolt on /bolt off unit so it can be removed when not in use.
I am anticipating a maximum trailer weight circa 900kg.
Any thoughts , photos or advice wold be well received.

Good evening Mark. I have in the past had a very successful tow bar fitted to my Mark 6 Special. I will endeavour to up load a photograph and if successful will add an explanation. Here goes!!!
I don’t know if this has been successful or not but here is the explanation.:-You will notice a tubular crossmember ahead of the spare wheel. There is a 2 inch angle iron crossmember inside the rear chassis crossmember. Close scrutiny of the photo will reveal two longitudinal supports between the tubular member and the angle iron. These take the weight of the spare. The two holes for bolting the tow ball are also visible.
I hope this is of some help.

Hi Mark,
I've got a period Witter towbar for the MKVI which I can photograph for you if that would help (assuming I can find it). As I remember, it's not a terribly sophisticated piece of engineering. It looks like they've taken inspiration from a Thomas Telford design then beefed it up a bit to be on the safe side. It basically consists of a massive piece of angle section running across the back of the car with two pieces that go forward and attach to captive nuts in the chassis rails. The welding is functional rather than pretty.
It came off a 1947 car so must have been a later fitment as Witter's was established in 1950 according to their website.
Good luck
