I appear to have lost turbo boost on my 1990 Turbo R. I was probably first aware of this more than a year ago, at the time feeling that the performance had diminished to little better than that of my previously owned Bentley Eight.
Fearing that the turbocharger may have seized, I removed the large air intake hose and was relieved to be able to spin the rotor quite freely.
Eventually I wondered if I had merely become accustomed to the performance and having no other Turbo R or Eight with which to compare performance left it at that. One day, however, when driving in slow-moving traffic I touched the throttle and was treated to the acceleration I had once known (and loved - a sensation akin to having a rug pulled from under one’s feet) this was, sadly, short-lived.
The car’s brief return to its normal former performance seems to confirm that the turbocharger is not functioning correctly after all and the fact that the fault had corrected itself, albeit temporarily, suggests to me that there may be a valve sticking or a faulty or disconnected switch somewhere and that the fault may be relatively easily remedied.
As I really would not know where to start, I wonder if any members have any suggestions or are aware of known faults that can occur and which could temporarily self-correct. I wonder also whether there are any checks that I can make to try to pinpoint the source of my problem?
I would be most grateful for any advice or pointers. |
