Hi
I have a 1994 continental R and main beam won't stay on. When I pull the lever back on the steering column with Dipped head lights on main beam flashes but won't stay on.
I have read that this could be the headlight ECU but before I pay out £500 I thought I would ask as I have also read that it could be a relay.
All help gratefully recieved. Many thanks.

I have a similar problem on my 1994 Brooklands. But looking through my previous invoices I see that there was a new headlight ECU replaced last year, so I will be trying another relay first and suggest you do the same.

Further on with this headlamp saga, I wonder if there is any info on where the relays are sited for the headlamps, although I am aware that the fuses are under the bonnet near to the nearside suspension leg., but where are those elusive relays.
I now only have running lights and no dipped at all, and only offside main beam if I hold the dip switch in position.
I see on the diagram that I have managed to get shows one 20amp fuse per headlamp.
Not going to pay a mechanic to swap relays. wish I could remember who borrowed my circuit tester.

Gave my garage a phone call about the lights, get told it could well be a loose connection. So will have another look when the sun comes out again, did check the fuses under the bonnet.
Anyone else have ideas.

Even the simple electrics of my WO have me baffled so I'm not going to be much direct help.
I notice that there are often questions relating to the cars of the 1980's and 1990's that rarely get an answer. Presumably workshop manuals are not available, but have you tried asking the crewe spares registrar, sadly it seems that few of the club 'officials' look at the forum so ......
Should there be some lobbying for the club to obtain workshop manuals for the later cars? Which could then be either loaned (or preferably digitally copied and made available on line).
The club offer excellent publications for the prewar cars but little for these later ones, as the membership is expanding in this area, it seems attention should be given to keeping these cars on the road.

Are Workshop manuals available from http://heritage.bentleymotors.com

Thank you John, yes that link has helped, I see what the garage meant about a poor connection, as I see that there is an earth connection strap on the Headlamp ECU and that might be the one as it was replaced not long ago, so once we get a dry warm day I may go mad in the sunshine and take a look.

I think. to update you that I have not been able to get under the car and am going to leave it to some spritely youngster to deal with. I did forget to mention that with the head lamps turned on they did tend to flicker, I decided to turn them off rather than upset the driver in front. It could well be just poor connections in my case.

Hi
Sorry, I should have replied sooner. I bought a second hand headlamp ecu which made no difference so put the car into an independent specialist at Crewe, Rob Jones. Common fault, and it was a relay, not sure where, these cars seem to differ from the wiring diagrams.
Thanks, Dave

If you look at the rolls Royce owners club link on Australia above there are numerous pdf copies of manuals that can be downloaded.

Not complete for the continental R but there for the higher volume cars.
