Browsing through a copy of a 1928 catalogue it refers to inspection lights (along with dash lights)
Might that be those tubular black pull out lights - perhaps by Lucas ?
I recall them on a Lagonda I had but that was 1934.

Would an inspection lamp be a light on the end of a length of flex ?
I have seen a number of different dash lights, including the pull out type with a bakerlight mushroom head. My car has a pair of nickel lights that you twist to turn them on and off, I’m sure there are quite a few others. |

Yes the one under the bonnet that has a flex enabling you to see things at night. (or in the day with my present eye sight)

My 3 litre came with what appeared to be an original inspection light, complete with a Bakelite socket installed in the dashboard. Even the flex is braided and seems original. A nice accessory to have with the car. |

interesting lamp but not sure about it - cable length looks enough to illuminate when changing a wheel.
I was hoping someone would have one that had been on the car when supplied new.
But many thanks for the info. |

John, does not Robert indicate that his car has one? Perhaps Robert could post a photo. |

The light is very much of the period with a rotating shaft allowing the flex to be stored within the casing of the light. |

Robert,
In the upper photo there appears to be a key on the dashboard next to the steering column. I am intrigued to know its purpose, is it for some form of security device? |

An unusual appendage for a vintage car. It does act as a cut-off between battery and starter but as we all know is not required. It was an addition made in the late 50's or early 60's by all accounts. |
