Could anyone please tell me the sizes of the box spanners that go into a 3 litre tool kit?

I’ve never seen a definitive list of tools in an original tool kit, the handbooks don’t list them, (although they do in the 6.5 & 8ltr manual), I vaguely recall that there may be a photo in the technical facts book, but don’t have my copy to hand.
This may give some clues:

John.
Thanks very much for that link.
I have now five further clues:
1/. Because there is a Tommy bar included, then it follows there was box spanners in the tool set.
2/. There are possibly three box spanners in the set.
3/. One is a long spanner.
4/. One is a short spanner.
5/. One is a wheel retaining nut spanner.
Does anyone know the size of the wheel retaining nut??
Its hard to tell from the picture if the box spanners are singe or double ended, or a mixture.
I have one further problem: Sometimes our American friends can be very resourceful and if a tool is not available then they made one, or substitute for a close match. As you say John, there is not much authentic information about.
With a bit of luck forum members may solve if one has an original kit.
That large "C" is a work of art. "Coupling rod coupling ring" what is that?
Peter. |

Hi Peter
I have three box spanners in my tool kit which came with the car - I assume little changed since dad's purchase in 1937.
They are all unmarked as to size - the large one is about 7" long and has 1 1/2" and 1 11/16 (AF) ends and fits the hub retaining nut and hub puller bolt.
The long one is about 9" long and is the spark plug spanner and is about 1" (AF) to suit the early plugs - this suits the Smith carburettor but SU cars need another type as well.
The third one I cannot find just at the moment and I do not know what it fits - when I find it I will let you know.
I think most of the tools are original except for the screwdrivers but all of the smaller ones have been used elsewhere or lost. |

Andrew
This is excellent information. Thank you very much.
I do think your screw drivers are the correct style. I hope you find your third spanner.

Hi Peter,
I have found the missing spanner - it is 6" in length and is about 1 1/8" (AF).
It is marked 3/4" and the holes fit the tommy bar but although it looks the same as one in the 61/2 kit I cannot find any use for it unless it is for the front hub which is 3/4" BSF according to Tech. Facts.
Regards - Andrew |

Andrew.
That is excellent.
Thanks very much for your help and effort. I know what it is like to search for something in the garage. It can become very frustrating. Once again, thanks. Peter. |
