Good day day everyone, I hope you are all doing great!
I have a 1996 late chassis number turbo R.
I was thinking to change the coolant to help protect from corrosion and head gasket etc and would like to know the best coolant to use.
I spoke to the Bentley dealer who said the use the old green coolant which they have used for years but didn't know what type of coolant it was and it didn't say on the bottle...
I am thinking modern coolants may have better properties but didn't want to make issues is hoped you may have an idea and then I can also get it from my local parts supplier.
does the engine self bleed on these?
also for spark plugs its usually NGK (RH13998P) are there other/better options or shall I just stay with that?
Thanks everyone in advance for taking the time to message, much appreciated! |

The green antifreeze (Coolant) is IAT "Inorganic Additive Technology" and is usually recommended for older cars. The more modern OAT "Organic Acid Technology" is usually to be avoided as it can have serious consequences for certain materials which older engines probably have.
I would stick to IAT.
Hopefully others will comment on plugs! (or disagree with my understanding of anti freeze) |

Yes John you are correct with that. The modern stuff can cause problems with engine parts.
As for spark plugs they are the recommended ones. Though I would ask is there a reason behind the questions. |

Thank you both so much for the information, much appreciated!
I just wondered as technology has moved on and I wondered if there was a better option than that originally specked for the car back in the 90's with better head protection and cooling properties etc.
So ill give it a few days and aim to get the green fluid as per your recommendation and also will stay with the plugs.
Does the system self bleed or need manually opening bleed valves?
It currently has 5w40 Castrol Edge - do you think that is the best choice or should I switch at the up coming service? |
