Would anyone be able to give be some friendly advice about improving the passenger compartment insulation?
I was wondering if rear seat comfort could be improved with a layer of something (uninflammable?) added under the wood frame the seat cushion sits on. Especially on the near side above the exhaust pipe. In warm weather that side gets uncomfortably hot.
Also, I would like to reduce the amount of hot air which passes directly from the engine bay to the front seat occupants. There is a gap between the inside of the scuttle and the bulkhead because of little remaining draught exclusion material. I suppose some of the holes in the floor can’t be insulated, like round the pedals, handbrake, and gear lever. Maybe the floor panel and floorboards could be insulated better? Maybe there’s some under-carpet insulating material to consider?
Many thanks for any help and Best Wishes to all for the New Year.

The exhaust could be insulated by wrapping in asbestos-type material. This was done in the old days. One could also stick a sheet of asbestos-type material directly to the underside of the floorboards above the exhaust pipe, as was done originally.
As for the engine bulkhead, heat transfer through this is beneficial at cold times of the year, and in the summer one can always open the window. I don't believe there should be any gap between the top of the bulkhead and the scuttle on a correctly coach-built car. |

Many thanks, this kind of stuff
from ‘Sounddeadeninguk.co.uk’ for example, might help a bit too.
Scuttle/bulkhead draught insulation is just old, I think, and needs a bit of TLC. Driving mainly in Northern Italy means I would prefer to add a couple of blankets against the cold and try reducing the blast of hot air from the engine bay which sometimes is added to outside temps of nearly 30°c. |
