Thank you Nicholas,
I should have given you more information. My 1954 Typre R does not seem to have any timing marks or pointer. Do you know where the timing light should be pointing please and when I do find a mark, what should the timing be set to?
Thanks again,
Rob.

My response was to the general question of using a timing strobe light. I always use a strobe for final checking of the timing on my various cars. I find it easiest to use the ht supply to cylinder 6, rather than cylinder 1, as it is closer to the flywheel. As for the actual details of timing marks and timing, you should use the workshop manual for your car, easily downloaded from many internet sites if you do not own one already.

Rob,

Is the car an automatic?

If so, the timing marks are seen from underneath. In the pressed steel cover at the bottom of the bell housing is a small hole.

See a rather involved method for finding the timing mark in the Service Handbook, page M14.
