I am looking after my brother's 56 S1 for a bit, and one of its longstanding issues is inoperable temp gauge. I know there is a kit to replace the old-style gauge with the updated style, but I'd like to first ensure that something has failed, not just a wiring problem etc.
Does anyone have good diagnostic steps to test the sender & gauge? |

There is an electrical, block mounted sender that fails, and the car is an oldster. |

Well the factory manual gives no real help here, but I checked resistance at the sending unit and get 165ohm. I have no idea what it should be, but it’s neither open circuit nor grounded so good as far as I can tell (FSM doesn’t give any range)
So I next went to check if resistance at the gauge connection was the same, and found the gauge was not connected at all!
I found the wire from the sender, verified same resistance. Found the 12v connection (both were taped off in the dash)
But I’m not sure which gauge terminal each connects to. And I wonder why it was disconnected.
There was a record of the gauge being rebuilt so I wonder if that was done but just never hooked up…
In any event, I suppose the next thing is to try hooking it up and see if gauge works, but I’m not sure which post on the gauge is for signal and which is for power…
Any clues? |
