Hello,

On my 1935 Bentley 3.5 , I have a Bentley Mascot which leans backwards, I understand it should be equipped with the forward leaning mascot?

Does anybody have a picture of the correct mascot the car should carry?

Many thanks
Paul

There is a picture of a 4.25 Derby with a forward sloping mascot in the "Derby cars" forum, "Vanden Plas Pillarless Coachwork" topic. I suppose what is correct for a particular car depends on the coachbuilder and what the original customer asked him to provide. Personally I would not like to have to turn the mascot when opening the bonnet.

Paul,
A picture of the correct mascot is on page 49 of Bernard King,s book The Derby Built Bentleys, it is the top right image. It shows a two winged forward sloping "B"

The later ones for the M series chassis is backward leaning, as are the 1946/47, A&B series MK VI cars, where I believe yours may originate, as a replacement.

The subsequent MK VI/R Type had a mascot very similar to the 1934 model, and are rather expensive.

Chris.

Stewart,

What a fantastic collection!

I remembered your recent post in which you referred to your two Scottish Bentleys and naturally wondered if you had miscounted the size of your collection. Iâ??ve had to re-read your post and now understand that you are not, after all, mistaken.

There must be another one somewhere.

Hi Chris
Its almost silent. You have to put up your volume on your computer to recognise the Derby tickover sound.

Then you miss Keith crunching the gears as the carpet moved a little. I cut out my remark which was loud and audible as the flip video was nearly in my mouth as I attempted to film the cars albiet badly

I am looking for a forward leaning mascot.
Can anyone help?
My 1935 car has a backward leaning mascot, very irritating having to move it through 90 degrees in the unusual event of lifting the bonnet!

My father told me that when my 3 ½ was used by my grand-father the mascot was the first thing to disappear in car-parks, so many of the old photos from the 1930's show no mascot. The car came back to me from the USA with a rear sloping B which I’m not going to change. Yes it’s a nuisance and I admit to having scratched the paint on the edge of the bonnet! Embarassed I would advise to invest in a parking cap from the BDC Derby spares scheme; it’s useful just to keep in the car.
Ciao,
Ewan

The backward leaning mascot is correct and there should be a chromed dimple on each side of the bonnet to prevent damage to the paint when the "B" is turned.

Changed later to the front leaner, it was resurrected for the early MK VI cars.
A Ewan says, a town cap is a must.

Thanks Christopher that is not what I thought I had read in the Bernard King "The Derby Built Bentleys". I recall it saying the backward leaning mascot was introduced in 1938 so assumed that on a 1935 car it would have been forward leaning.

Yes it is very confusing as I seen a lot of early cars with rear leaning"B"s, and also even more with what are definitely MK VI replacements, and I just wonder if so many had been lost that the later, M series ones were fitted.

Even Nick Walker's book the Derby Bentleys in detail has a mixture of styles
for the early cars, either a town cap or one of the leaners.

I just satisfy the mind with, "if its got a pair of bonnet nudgers, its OK!"
