Type R oil filter change

I am very new to Bentleys and have quickly discovered that the Type R oil filter is very difficult to change. Hardest in fact by far of the scores of other cars I've worked on. Managed to remove the bowl, clean and fit new filter but cannot effect an oil tight seal. Rubber seal is of course new and I thought I'd managed to locate it properly but apparently not. Any tips more than welcome please.

Did you poke the old top sealing ring out? The spring is the bitch!

The Flexolite conversion is very worth while.

Tell us more about the car please.

Many thanks for reply. Yes, I removed old seal. The spring did not seem to present too much of a problem. I pushed the bowl up (courtesy of much bruised and battered forearms) just enough for my wife to turn the domed nut on by two threads so I could push the seal up into place, twisting bowl as I went. Although on inspection at tickover I could see no leaks, it lost oil at running revs. Yes, the Fuelflow looks much better but I assume a need to remove the inlet manifold to gain necessary working space. A bit of a job in itself. Any idea if any Bentley specialists might do it for me ? The car is a 1953 manual which was extensively and well rennovated in the '70's. Still in far better than average order. Mechanically good, pulling well and smoothly with good pressure and temp. Not concours (I favour working cars) and I would rate it about 7.5/10.

Good morning Christopher, further to my reply about Flexolite (I inadvertently referred to Fuelflow thinking of some past project) I have since looked properly at their website and seen that one does not have to remove the housing into which the bowl fits, so I see that it is simple enough. Sorry to have been a bit dense ! Thanks again for help.

Hi Charles, it is so easy to think "complications" with all the tangle of gubbins under the bonnet.

When you do decide to fit the Flexolite job, you must fit a thin aluminium washer under the fixing bolt head, and cement the bolt into the adaptor with high strength stud or thread seal as the simple rubber filter seal can stick on like epoxy glue, and all the lot becomes undone.

What is the chassis number of the car?
