Hi all

What volume of oil does the transmission require? The previous owner of my car had it filled to the top of the filler (i.e. right under the cap). That's correct for the differential - not sure about the transmission though.

Thank you

Gearbox - half way up the diameter of the layshaft.
Diff - up to the base of the threads on the filler/drain on the back plate of the diff. If you over fill, oil will find it's way past the baffles and up the axle tube. There should be a small drain hole either side of the diff to let excess oil drain onto the floor - these can get blocked by road dirt.

Thanks Chris. But i can't see into the gearbox. All I can see is down the filler hole, which takes a quick, sharp turn. Do you know. What the volume is?

Gear box: nominaly 6 pints (Imperial), Diff: 3 pints.

My gearbox "C" doesn't have a filler - only a breather - and I lift off the top of the 'box and pour the oil in until it looks like half way up the layshaft.

Thanks Chris - 6 pints it will be.

Speaking of diff - what are you pitting in there? I use a 75-90 high pressure oil in my 3 litre. Probably will put the same in this car.

There ia a lot of discussion about whether or not to use "gear oil" in the gearbox and diff, and I don't have a clue as to what is best. I put Castrol Classic GP50 in both and have had no problems.

What I do have is a gearbox drain plug with a magnet fixed in it and when I drain the oil there is always a "christmas tree" of swarf stuck to the magnet. However, I think that that is just a comentary on the quality of my gear changing, rather than on the particular oil that I use!

I am using Redline MT90 in the gearbox.

Something like this?

I attribute this to the previous owner! We'll see what mine looks like soon enough

Chris, what's the purpose of what looks like a hole in the outside threaded part of the plug?

I thought it might be.
I've fixed my various magnets by using ones with holes in them and putting a screw with a nut on it through the holes and then soldering the screw in place and aralditing it all. So if I ever want to I won't be able to remove them easily. Like you I get fine iron filings on them but fortunately not large pieces. I'll post a photo later.

I don't even want to think about the consequences of the magnet coming loose and sticking to a gear wheel!

The top two are an unused spare diff/gearbox plug and the bottom one is an oil sump plug during an oil change.
PS I roughened up the plug surface before applying the glue, which I've now remembered was JB Weld.
