|
|
My wife and I are now proud owners of 1994 Turbo R , my birthday present to myself last Friday !
The car was obtained with a lot of advice and assistance from numerous members, after several test drives, calls and emails ,over 8 months, most notably from Ken Lea and Julian Brown , thank you
I have 2 questions please ,after a session on a ramp today ( the car was MOT tested with no advisories 3 weeks ago )
1- how to access the rear high level stop light
3 - Should a weep from a gaiter on the steering arm ( off side ) merit
further investigation ?
Thanks in anticipation

Hello Mark,
I had a Turbo R and now have a Continental R, for both of which I undertake all (or most of) the maintenance.
Sorry that I haven't responded more quickly and you probably have the issue fixed by now. However, if not, then here goes.
Ref the steering gaiter weep: It rather depends what you describe as a 'weep'. Get the car raised safely (on axle stands or drive onto a high kerb so you can scramble underneath with NO RISK of 2 1/2 tons dropping onto you (please!). Leave the steering unlocked
Clean the gaiter off with a cloth and dry the outer surface of gaiter and steering rack. Get out from under the car, then move the steering from side to side (an assistant with clean hands would be handy).
Then inspect the gaiter and pull it from side to side over the rod inside. You might hear/feel a bit of oil slooshing around inside. If it is only a bit of oil you can feel - and there is no dripping from the gaiter - then you should be OK to tighten up the gaiter retaining steel strip (pair of fine nosed pliers should do the trick). You might have to remove (carefully) and replace the strip, if you can't get hold of the end of the old one to tighten it. Halfords sell these steel securing strips, alongside the electrical tie wraps.
If there is oil persistently dripping out of the gaiter, then it's probably a new gaiter - find a good independent specialist and get a quote.
Hope this helps. If you get other issues that I could help with (I virtually rebuilt my Turbo R, so have done most jobs short of engine/gearbox out), then drop me a line.

If the vehicle is leaking from the rubber steering rack gaiters that means the seals on the rack are failing. Most of the time, it also indicates the inside of the rack is worn out and the ram has too much up and down play for the seals to hold up. Very common in the older cars. _________________ John Elder Robison |
