|
|
Hi all, Any recommendations in terms of which motor oil is best for use in a carburetted (1980 T2) engine?
The manual recommends a range of different viscosity combos, most of them thicker 50s. My mechanic (Sandells) uses 15w40. Does it matter?
I'm inclined to use Castrol GTX 4L 15W-40 A3/ B3 Engine Oil.
Views anyone, or do I need to get a life? _________________ June 1980 T2 (SBH 40781), Moorland Green & Green. |

If Sandells are looking after the car for you then I would be happy to use whatver they find to be best for an engine of your type and condition.

So long as the engine does,nt rattle, then it is OK, but make certain that oil contains plenty of ZDDP anti-scuff additive, as the lack of it causes spalling of the tappets and cams.
See post on Arnage, when the elimination of ZDDP,with the intention of not to degrade the catalyst, leads to rapid wear of the valve gear componens. The cases are not isolated and one Northern garage insisted on an engine change after two sets of camshaft and tappets were worn out, rather quickly.
I use Comma Diesel 15/40 or 20/50, for this reason. |

Interesting comments. Comma make oil desiged for older engines. The viscosity reflects the car manual's recommendation (20w50). This stuff is no more expensive than regular modern oils. That might just be the ticket?

Just acquired a Mulsanne and the Oil pressure gauge needle continually points to High i.e. not in the white band range.
Any ideas?
I guess it's the Oil pressure gauge sender (UE40480) to try first
