| Is it true that you have to take the whole dashboard apart in order to replace a simple instrument gauge light bulb? That's what I've been told. There has to be a better way. Any suggests? |

Unfortunately most new cars are designed this way. "Design for manufacturability not maintenance".
You will probably find that the bulbs (or LEDs) are soldered to the circuit board, no sockets. |
