|
|
A friend of mine has recently purchased a 3 ltr.
The steering wheel (non standard) is very flimsy, are genuine ones available? The central boss is fitted accommodating the advance & retard and hand throttle.
The exhaust manifold has a crack around cylinder no:4 area, could this be cast iron welded successfully or are replacements available?
The engine has no rev counter gauge or drive assembly; can these be purchased?
Apologies for the questions but this forum seemed the best location to start?
Thanks you in advance. |

No doubt others can give you more and slightly different replies, but here are mine.
1. Steering wheel: if by genuine you mean original, then he'll have to look for a good secondhand one, which is theoretically possible. But I'm sure good reproduction ones can be bought. Ask any of the standard suppliers, such as D Day, or W Medcalf.
2. Exhaust. I think it depends how bad the crack is. There are some expert cast iron welders who might be able to do it, but they'd need to see it. As to a replacement manifold, the same reply as above.
3. I think rev counter drive assemblies can be purchased or made up. I've never heard of anyone making reproduction rev counters, so he needs a good secondhand one. I wouldn't like to do without a rev counter for long. |

What do you mean by "flimsy" steering wheel? Original wheels were flexible, and do feel very flimsy. |

Do you mean it's a 4.5 litre type wheel as opposed to the original more rigid 3 litre type?

The steering wheel is defiantly not 'to pattern'. It looks like an 'off the shelf' generic cheap one. It doesn't have the aluminium four legged center. |

I would do but the car in question is miles away from me. I have seen similar ones on a pre-war MG,. The owner described is a 'make and do' temporary one! |

I have a good 3L exhaust manifold looking for a good home. I live in Surrey.

We could probably negotiate around half a dozen bottles of drinkable red.
