Laurie's computer setup (picture)

This is not actually part of the workshop since it is in an upstairs room. There are now five computers in all in the network ranging from an early Windows 98SE to a new Windows 7 which has its own keyboard and screen (on the left). The other keyboard and screen looks after the other four and is switched to each one as required. The separate Windows 7 screen is proving to be very convenient.

There is a common data store for all five computers.

Hi Laurie,

I have to say I am impressed, over here we run 7 laptops and a Zyxel NSA310 2TB NAS storage device.

Keeping all this going I find to be a pain, but using RDP (Remote Desktop) and "Allway Sync" ( Free backup tool ) to do the backups at least keeps us working.

I find Windows 7 more work to maintain, not as easy as XP

But as long as it is all fun, then go for it, it is good to see computers being used.

For some reason I seem to be held personally responsible for any IT problems which anyone in the family may have. I'm daft enough to keep sorting them out, but find it extremely tedious and unpleasant.

All I can say is that you must have some patience, Laurie, and I'm hugely impressed by your computery skills.

A motherboard failed recently on one of my computers and has now been replaced with a new one. The CPU fan was clogged with much dirt although this was not the cause of the problem. I will have to clean things more frequently in future.

I get the Hoover/Dyson/vacuum cleaner to mine.

Hi Laurie,

I vacuum out my computers from time to time. They do say that the stuff that collects in them is mainly dead skin cells from the user.

I've just got the two PC's in my study; one for work and one on the internet. The one on the internet slows down after about a year and needs a complete re-install. The other doesn't.

The work screen is in front of me and the internet one is off to one side. I am having physiotherapy for the painful back-injury caused by this arrangement. The problem is caused by slouching forward and twisting to the right at the same time. The physiotherapist has given me a lecture on office ergonomics.

After a lifetime of abusing my back lifting engines, riding wild horses and all the rest, what a pathetic way to injure myself.

You should, as a minimum, get a swivel chair and make sure your whole body is facing in the direction of the screen you are using.

I expect you know all this already.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I do have a swivel chair. All data, from all the computers, is beng moved to Raid 1 NAS storage which will simplify things.

Two screens do all that I need to do: one is fed from a KVM switch and takes output from more than one computer. The latest one is on Windows 7 which I find to be very awkward since it won't run several important programs which are OK on Windows XP.

being lost without much to do, I found myself scrolling through the Forum.
The photo brought back many memories of the machines we had in the dim and distant past, for me commencing around 1980.A commodore if I remember rightly. So it would seem that I must have accrued 40 years of knowledge, now I wonder where that is stored.
