Could you tell me what is the correct number of teeth on the starter bendix for a 4.5 with standard flywheel and cone clutch?
Thanks. |

On the subject of starter motors, I found that the Smiths starter on my car did not like the increased compression on my car, and even after a rebuild suffered in very cold weather. I replaced it with a CAV BS5 which is of the pre engaged type (the body is slightly narrower than the Smiths so required a shim). The CAV BS5 unit was half the cost of rebuilding the Smiths and replacement pinions seem to be available here http://www.vintagebentleyspareparts.com/shop/new-parts/new-parts-manufactured/starter-pinion-cav-bs5-starter-motor/ |

I had a bolt shear on the bendix of the Smiths starter on my 3 litre last year. After Iain Warner kindly lent me his spare, I bought a Ford Model A bendix from the USA. Ten teeth instead of 11, but otherwise the same and works perfectly. If you count the teeth on most of the cars around, I bet at least half have ten teeth. |
