It has been suggested that I change to electronic ignition. Does anyone have any comments with regard to advantages/disadvantages and also names of potential suppliers? Also the car now has just one set of points - any comments? |

Sounds like someone may have fitted a later Delco D200 series distributor such as was used on the Triumph straight sixes. You can get a Chinese one for very little. You have to swap the drive coupling across then it's a straight swap.
A pal fitted an electronic kit to the standard dizzy in his MKVI. His subsequent party piece is that it starts instantly which isn't necessarily a good thing, but is quite impressive.
I fitted a cheapo Accuspark kit to our Nash Metropolitan largely to eliminate the ignition system from enquiries when investigating a misfire. It did seem to cheer it up a bit despite not fixing the misfire (head off next) and, again, it bursts into life very enthusiastically.
Of course we then have to carry the old mechanical dizzy in boot as these things fail without warning, as happened to a pal with an Accuspark on his VW T2.
Electronic is great when it’s working but less so when it isn’t.
Do let us know how you get on.
Kind regards,
Stephen
P.S. theres a cheap one here;

If the original system, including the automatic choke is properly set up, as is mine, the car will always start first time and run smoothly. I would never fit electronic ignition because, as has been stated, it can fail without warning. I certainly would not fit any cheap Chinese parts. If the original system ever failed, which is very unlikely, then the two-points arrangement lets you proceed on three cylinders and will yield enough power and reasonable running to more than get you home. I have never come across anyone who has lost running on six. I know how well they run on three because one of my carbs. gave trouble but the two points ignition saved the day. Good luck whatever you decide. Charles |
