Mk VI - Removing the rear brake rods

I'm struggling to undertsand how the rear brake actuating rods are attached at the backplate and how I dissassemble. I've got as far as removing the dust cap from the shoe expander.......

Hi Al,

From memory, the rod comes out through the expander, temporarily, to allow the cone thing to be detached. The usual way to achieve this is to remove the expander and rod as an assembly (without applying any significant torque to the nuts as that will shear off the studs causing your wallet to wilt). You need to remove the milk-bottle-top end cap and two rivet type things that retain the pistons then it should come to bits with a certain amount of persuasion.

Sorry I haven't time for pictures or a more comprehensive explanation this morning.

Al,

1) Get a book.
2) Open it.
3) Read mark learn and inwardly digest.

Nut 8 is pinned.
Washer 7 is a Thackray washer and the nuts were never tightened to let the expander move.
If you have ruined 4 you may never get another one, except if you machine a 28 mm copper end cap.

6 is the retaining pine 2 off, with bifurcated ends.
12 is a rubber, calf castrating ring






The master cylinders are invariably knackered and need re-lining.

As one of your front early expanders is missing and new ones are £700, you may source the later double piston type, but be advised that the drawing G17 is actually a mirror image of the real thing.
